1STDIBS SPOTLIGHTS KEY INTERIORS TRENDS FOR 2022
Identified by interior design experts, we delve into the colours, materials, and themes set to be hot for the coming year
The results from the annual 1stDibs Interior Designer Trend Survey* uncover the colours, materials, and themes set to be hot for 2022, showcasing how the events of the past year are likely to inform the interiors of the future. According to interior design experts, key trends to watch are:
- Biophilia: harmony with nature is in, as is a desire for natural materials
- Sustainability: prioritising environmentally friendly materials and processes
- Fitness focus: home gyms and health-centred wellness rooms continue to rise in popularity
- Cobalt blue and tan: are set to be popular shades, alongside emerald and white
- Outdoor spaces: expect increased interest in well-designed patios, porches, and garden spaces well-suited for socialising
Design elements such as natural lighting, greenery, organic shapes, and natural forms are likely to be prioritised as we look to harmonise our interiors with our surrounding environment. This correlates with our desire to reimagine the home as a healthy living space, conducive to wellbeing and productivity.
Hand in hand with the rising interest in biophilic design, experts have noted an increased demand for sustainable and natural materials. Expect to see a greater emphasis on recycled elements such as salvaged wood and vintage items, a preference for textural natural finishes in bamboo or cork, and the provenance of materials highly researched.
More time at home has led us to not only redesign our remote work environment, but shape extended spaces for exercise, relaxation, and reflection. Weight rooms, indoor sports courts, spas, and meditation sanctuaries have all become more and more important as we continue to promote happy, healthy lifestyles at home.
COBALT BLUE AND TAN
The popularity of nature-based motifs is consistent with a preference for deep green and blue shades. When designers were asked which colours they predicted would come out on top in 2022, emerald green and white tied for first place. Sage green, burnt orange, and tan followed close behind, whilst cobalt blue knocked navy off the chart.
As outdoor gatherings became the norm during the pandemic, patios, balconies, and gardens grew in importance. Going into 2022, they will be continually prioritised as essential places to unwind and get together with friends and family, with a focus on designs that enable socialising year-round.
